30 day reflection on my Medium writing

1 day early

I promised myself that I would do a reflection of my Medium posts after 30 days to check up on my progress. It’s only been 29 days, but I’m writing this because I’m running into problems already. First, and foremost, is that my ideas seem to be growing stale.

I have no problem churning out article after article, 5x a week. I am aware of my environment well enough that I’m not running out of things to write about.

The problem is that I don’t think I’m getting better. One of the main goals of this writing is to be able to refine my craft to become better.

I didn’t expect 30 days to have a major difference, to be honest. But I feel like if I keep going on this route, I think I would still have this same level of success and writing quality at the end of the year. I’m kind of writing what comes to mind, but not editing or refining it.

It definitely doesn’t help that I can’t use Grammarly where I write half the week.

Write more, publish less

This idea came to me as I was reading other people’s writing habits. After learning about how Medium works, I noticed how other people were using it and what they recommended.

I started off wanting to write like Ayo. I had the background of writing a lot. Problem was, my ideas weren’t that clear. Sometimes I’d hit it big, but I’m not at the level where I could consistently sustain that.

So I’m changing my update schedule.

Instead of writing 5 articles a week, I’ll be writing 6. But I won’t be publish 6 articles. I’ll be publishing twice a week, 2 articles this time.

Every two days, I’ll be writing 3 articles, but keeping 1 back. We’ll see how that works for the next 30 days.

Finding my voice in different areas

Finding things that resonate with people is hard. It’s especially hard if you haven’t found your voice yet.

There are a few areas where I seem to have found something that I like talking about that people are interested in. These include:

  • Taking ideas from academic areas (such as psychology) and applying that to productivity.
  • Cool things about mental models and learning (which was my most successful article)

Places where I’m still trying to find my voice:

  • Design and design thinking (applying insights from my career)
  • Personal stories
  • Continuing to apply certain fields (besides psychology) to unique problems.

Why do I write?

I like writing. I tried and failed to make it my career in the past, but that doesn’t mean that I don’t want to keep going with this.

But I’m still trying to figure out my end goal for this website. I see different paths to ‘success’ that I could take on this platform. I haven’t really found mine yet.

I want to develop this writing into something, whether personal or productive. But to do that, I have to change up the way I’m doing things.

Here’s to another (possibly productive) 30 days of growth.
